When I started working at #AWS after a managerial role at #Gett, people often asked me about the transition. How does someone who always wants to lead and make an impact move to such a massive company? The word "screw" came up more than once- and not because I was moving apartments🏡
Anyone who joins a global tech giant like AWS, #Google, #Microsoft, or any other major company knows this feeling. At first, it can be overwhelming- the hierarchical structure is complex, there are countless departments and processes, and figuring out how to stand out and advance seems challenging. But once you understand the game, the size of the organization can actually become a huge career advantage.
Key Challenges
1. Feeling Like a "Small bolt"🔩-Big companies are filled with talented people, and it can be hard to see your own unique value in such a massive system. This is often the biggest fear when making the switch to a large corporation.
2. Dealing with Bureaucracy and Processes- Unless you're coming from an organization of a similar scale, the transition can be daunting due to bureaucracy and long decision-making processes. Everything requires approvals, and there are numerous policies and rules to learn. If you have previously held leadership roles in smaller companies, this challenge becomes even more significant.
3. Finding a Way to Stand Out- With so many #skilled colleagues, how do you build a strong professional reputation and differentiate yourself?

Strategies for Success: Turning Size into an Advantage
1. Take Your Time⌚ - Working in a large tech company requires patience, deep breaths, and an understanding of the system. I call it smart navigation- learning how the company operates, identifying relevant departments for your role, and connecting with the right #people who can help move things forward. Unlike smaller companies, where roles are often more clearly defined, in large corporations, multiple people can have similar titles. That is why it's crucial to understand exactly who does what so you can efficiently push forward the tasks that matter to you. for me, that means my #customers.
2. Build an Internal Network - Many people underestimate the importance of internal connections within the company. Initiating conversations with colleagues from different teams, participating in cross-functional projects, and finding #mentors within the company are all critical to success. Many large companies have structured mentorship programs. Additionally, internal volunteering is a great way to break down barriers and connect with people in different roles.
3. Take Ownership of Your Career- In both big and small companies, no one will tell you what your next career move should be. You have to be the #entrepreneur of your own career and actively seek opportunities. One thing that positively surprised me at AWS was that even during onboarding, you are expected to discuss #career development with your manager. However, the responsibility for career growth is entirely yours. The advantage? In a company of this size, there are countless opportunities for growth across different roles, locations, and divisions.
4. Increase Your Visibility- Because the company is so large, its essential to work #strategically to ensure your contributions are recognized internally. At the same time, leverage the strong #brand of the company externally to showcase your value. Everything should be done authentically- share relevant work, but make sure your efforts are communicated effectively within the organization. Your direct #manager should be aware of your contributions, but key #stakeholders should also be in the loop, as they can influence your career and help you drive results for your customers.
5. Identify Your Sponsor (or Sponsors) - This person (or multiple people) is the one sitting in the rooms where decisions about your career and your customers are being made. Understand their goals, their KPIs, and how your work contributes to their success. Aligning your efforts with their objectives can make a significant difference in your career progression.(more on the different between Sponsor and Mentor can be fins it here)
Conclusion
Navigating a large company can feel overwhelming, but with the right approach, it becomes an #opportunity for growth. By building strong internal networks, taking ownership of your career, and making sure your impact is recognized, you can turn the size of the organization into an advantage. It's all about finding the right people, understanding the system, and positioning yourself for success.
